Apple's iPod Touch. Worth the hype?
The amount of hype around the introduction of the very first iPod was unlike any other in the technology industry at the time.
Just take a look at this video for example, to see Steve Jobs introducing the iPod at the 2001 Apple Music Event:
Ever since then, Apple has peppered us with a whole range, from iPod’s that clip on to your shirt when you’re running, to iPod’s that are rooted around storage and play in to the needs of the music fans with a huge cache of tunes.

Then in September 2008, along came the iPod Touch. Released in coincide with the original iPhone, the iPod Touch offered the same utensils as the iPhone, except without the ability to use it as a phone.
Packed with a touch-screen andhigh end graphics, but bugged with battery issues and memory size concerns, the iPod Touch seemed to cater for pretty much everyone. The runners could buy a special case to clip it to the arm when running, and then download a special app that talks to your shoes. The parents could give it to their kids on strenuous car journeys to keep them quiet. Everybody wins.
But is this well-marketed bit of gadgetry really worth the price tag, that has still managed to sell over 60 million units? On closer inspection, it would seem not.
You see, the iPod Touch caters for everyone, and no-one at the same time. It’s a bit of a ‘jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none’, and in a society today, where we expect our tech to last future changes, this just isn’t excetable.
So how have Apple managed to ship 60 million units since 2008?
Marketing. The Apple brand is price-less, and if you glue an Apple sticker to a bit of cobble, some sucker will be willing to part with cash for it.
Sure, it’s got state-of-the-art graphics, and boasts access to a high end App Store, but let’s just remember what the iPod really is. “iPod is a line of portable music players created and marketed by Apple Inc.”. Hmm, Music Player you say…
